A selection of Stelrad’s Low Surface Temperature radiators, its electric towel rails and its best-selling Compact panel radiators have been selected for a ground-breaking extra care scheme in Workington on the Cumbrian coast, just north of the Lake District.
The owner of the new development is Carlisle-based Riverside Housing, the main contractor is Atkinson Builders whilst Design and Build contractor for the development is Cumbria Mechanical.
The new extra care scheme at Harbour Place in Workington, is well underway and once completed will offer 107 affordable homes – a mix of supported housing and social housing for the local community in the town. The scheme offers 79 one and two bedroom apartments for people over 55 with an eligible care need. The site will also include a selection of 28 affordable bungalows for people over 55. The extra care housing gives older people or adults with care needs the choice to live in their own home with dignity and access to innovative, high quality and flexible service provision. Purpose built, the extra care housing is an alternative to conventional care homes.
Residents will have their own private accommodation with their own front door, in a scheme that caters for single people and couples. As and when their care needs change over time, so too can the level of care and support. This means the residents can remain independent and have the peace of mind that Riverside ‘s dedicated staff are on hand to provide the levels of care they need.
The Extra-Care scheme offers on-site care staff, non-resident management staff and careline alarm service for residents. The main building with the apartments will also offer a lift, a communal lounge, a laundry, a garden, an activities room and a hairdressing salon. There will also be a restaurant that will open to the public – an ideal facility for apartment residents who want to welcome and entertain family and friends.
The Extra-Care Scheme features Stelrad’s Low Surface Temperature radiators – the leading range in the UK with radiators in casings that never exceed 43 degrees C to the touch. This makes them ‘safe to touch’ and ensures that residents and their visitors at no stage come into contact with high temperature metal surfaces keeping them safe and secure 24 hours a day. The electric towel rails in the bathrooms in these apartments are easily controlled too to ensure that the heating system for all the apartments remains safe and controlled at all times. The Compact radiators in the bungalows are from the best-selling radiator range in the UK and offer efficient and effective heating throughout the rooms of each bungalow.
Low surface temperature radiators – LSTs – are key where there is a need to meet NHS Guidance for ‘Safe Hot Water and surface temperature’ – in hospitals, care and nursing homes, as well as sheltered housing, schools, nurseries and other educational establishments and in an increasing amount of general needs housing that may be used by vulnerable people during that home’s lifetime.
LST radiators are being specified for a number of major projects up and down the country with housing associations and other social landlords at the front of the queue when it comes to ordering these ‘safe to touch’ radiator options.
Lewis Aird is Stelrad’s Specification Manager for the North East and North West: “This is a major development for us to be involved in and we’ve seen 232 of our LST radiators specified along with 79 Fantasia Fluid Chrome electric towel rails and more than 50 Compacts for the bungalows. We’re delighted that so many people here in Workington will enjoy their new homes with all the warmth that these radiators can share.”
