Stelrad Electric Series radiators feature in major refurbishment project for Cheltenham College

There’s a major refurbishment project taking place in the centre of Cheltenham that features Stelrad’s new electric radiator series.

Cheltenham College is one of the country’s leading co-educational independent schools for boarding and day pupils aged 13–18. The College has 750 pupils from around the UK and across the world and is in the heart of Regency Cheltenham Spa, blending a rich history with modern facilities and technologies.

The College is in the process of renovating a Gothic house within its grounds, the 150-year-old Dewerstone House, into a new office building, complete with staff accommodation in the form of a two bedroomed apartment. The grade II house is set back from Thirlestaine Road overlooking the impressive cricket ground which hosts the annual Cheltenham Cricket Festival for Gloucestershire County Cricket Club.

Architect John Middleton designed Dewerstone House in the 1870s in a Gothic revival style, with large windows and pointed arches. Even though the plans for the building involve the installation of solar panels, the iconic fish scale tiles on the roof will be repaired and retained as the panels are destined for a hidden part of the roof.

The heating system is being upgraded and the use of electric radiators means far easier installation than if the heating system was a traditional boiler driven, wet system requiring pipework to be installed. The age of the building sees far thicker walls than would be the case with modern construction making the running of pipework around the building a major headache to overcome.

The installation sees the installation of more than fifty white Alyne and eleven anthracite Column electric radiators from the Stelrad Electric Series. The main contractor on the project is Envirotech, based in Birmingham and the M&E consultant is The Engineering Practice based in Leamington Spa. Radiators were supplied by Wolseley Pipe in Wolverhampton.

Stuart Dixon is Stelrad’s Specification Manager for the Midlands and East Anglia: “We’re seeing huge interest in our Electric Series radiators especially for projects like this one in Cheltenham where we see the benefits of electric heating in Grade II historical buildings where these radiators take much of the hard work out of installing pipework and running it around a larger building such as this one. These are good looking radiators adding warmth and a quality look to a traditional mid-Victorian Gothic building the likes of which are dotted all across Regency Cheltenham. We’re delighted to be involved in this project and showcasing the excellence of our electric radiator offering.”

The Electric series range includes a dozen or so different models with a number of sizes of each model available, with standard radiators for any room along with a selection of towel rails specifically targeted at bathrooms and en-suites.

As well as offering effective, functional heating in new and existing homes and larger properties, as you would expect from Stelrad, the radiators in the Electric Series are aesthetically appealing and provide attractive options for the décor and come with a five-year warranty on the heating parts and a two-year warranty on the electric components.

The Stelrad Electric Series provides a range of exciting new options where direct electric heating is the chosen option. Head for the Stelrad website at www.stelrad.com for further details.
