Adam Mars from Stelrad Manufacturing recently organised another sponsored walk for the Social and Charity Forum to raise funds for the company’s chosen charities – Bluebell Wood Childrens Hospice and Cancer Research for Children and Young People.
Taking place on Sunday 21st September the walk started at Sheffield Victoria Quays and wound its way through South Yorkshire following canals along the way to finish in Swinton at the Gate Inn. It was about 14 miles in length although for those who fancied a shorter route, they were able to finish at Meadowhall and catch a train from there to Swinton to join everyone else at the pub to celebrate completing their bit of the walk.
More than 30 people took part in the walk. The walk followed the canal which runs by Meadowhall, exits at the New York Stadium in Rotherham, followed by a short walk through Rotherham town centre, rejoining the route close to the Walk in the centre of Rotherham, then back along the canal that snakes behind Parkgate Shopping Complex, exiting at ASDA supermarket in Dalton. It then goes along the wash towards Rawmarsh, up and along Barbers Avenue, Green Lane and then on to Dale Road, down to Warren Vale and the finish line.
The walk was along a tarmacked path but parts of it proved to be a bit muddy – but the good news is that being alongside a canal the walk was mostly flat.
There were four groups – the main group meeting at Stelrad was picked up by coach and taken to Sheffield. The second group was cyclists who went from Swinton to Sheffield and back. The third group – a few of the participants made their own way there and walked with families and dogs! The fourth group took a shorter route – about five miles from Sheffield to Meadowhall and then ‘trained’ it to Swinton.
It was a great event and the walkers managed to stay mainly dry for the fourteen miles: “It was great to see the walk and cycle ride so well supported,” said Adam. “We have raised in excess of £3000 in total for our two charities – plus matching by the company – and I’m already working on the next event!”
