Stelrad radiators have been specified for a number of churches up and down the country on a regular basis over the years, but recently they were installed as a result of a higher calling – in St Mary’s Catholic Cathedral in Newcastle!
The Cathedral Church of St Mary is a Grade 1 listed building, and the mother church of the Diocese of Hexham and Newcastle and seat of the Bishop of Hexham and Newcastle. The early Victorian Cathedral, was designed by Augustus Welby Pugin and built between 1842 and 1844, and elderly cathedrals have not traditionally been the warmest places to worship during the winter months!
The old heating system had been relatively ineffective, leaving the cathedral on the chilly side despite having the heating switched on. It was decided by the group at the cathedral responsible for the building that new radiators might be more effective. An order was placed for 22 of Stelrad’s attractive Concord style double radiators, but with the special requirement that they were delivered in Chocolate Brown colour to blend in with the pews and other woodwork in the building.
The installation was carried out by contractors DJM Mechanical with eleven radiators placed up and down the north and south transepts and the result has been well received by everyone who uses the cathedral. Even on the chilliest of evenings, the radiators provide enough warmth to keep the churchgoers comfortable.
