The Tour of Yorkshire Cycle Race flashed its way through the county of Yorkshire recently, from Thursday 3rd to Sunday 6th May. Yorkshire went bike crazy and local businesses along the route of the Tour entered into the spirit of things – including Stelrad, the UK’s leading radiator manufacturer based in Mexborough which welcomed the Tour on the second day of the race.
The race passed close to the Stelrad manufacturing and national distribution centres in the town and a unique blue and yellow bicycle made entirely from radiator parts, proudly adorned one of the roundabouts the race passed on route from Barnsley to Ilkley past Conisbrough Castle, and through Mexborough – at speed!
The bike made entirely out of Stelrad radiator parts was the brainchild of a small project team with most of the engineering creation carried out by Alan Smith, Asset Care Facilitator – and stood out perfectly from its position on the roundabout.
“We’re very proud of it – the lads have done a great job and it’s received accolades from everyone who has seen it, including local Councillor Sean Gibbons who was really impressed with it when he came into Stelrad to see it for himself,” says Stelrad’s Lisa Chambers, HR Manager. “We can’t overstate the excitement levels that the Tour generated around here, as a result of it coming through Mexborough again this year! We had a fantastic day even if because of the nature of cycle riding events – they weren’t in the town for long!”
