Stelrad apprentice Joel McCabe has been shortlisted and is one of the finalists for the Rotherham Apprentice of the Year 2017 awards. Joel has done extremely well to be shortlisted to the final 16, from the 150 applications entered from companies across the area.
Joel is a member of Stelrad’s Asset Care Team, maintaining equipment in the manufacturing and distribution areas for the company. During his apprenticeship Joel has been able to experience every aspect of the manufacturing side of the Stelrad business, including working in the engineering stores, the tooling workshop, the refurbishment workshop, the packaging area, on high speed line reliability, lubrication maintenance, and has shadowed three members of the management team, a shift engineer, and the weekend team. He has excelled in every aspect of the work he has undertaken and shown huge enthusiasm for the area of work for which he is aiming to carry out himself once he achieves his qualifications.
Operations Director David Taylor says: “It is essential that the equipment and plant in the manufacturing area of the business runs efficiently and reliably at all times in order for us to produce the large number of products that we produce every day. We have a 99.5% on time delivery record for products manufactured at the Mexborough site. To maintain this sector leading record, it is vital that we have people we can rely on working in the maintenance team. When you mention the term apprentice, some people think these young people simply watch qualified people doing their jobs. Our apprentices are encouraged to take on responsibility from the day they start with us, initially in a fully supervised capacity but increasingly as time goes by, they are encouraged to take more and more responsibility and undertake tasks on their own, of increasing importance as their abilities grow. Some can cope with this, others are not so capable. Joel is one of the most capable young people we have ever taken on as an apprentice. He is a sensible young man who learns quickly and is keen to take on responsibility.
“We are confident he will perform well in the interviews being held later in June and wish him all the luck in the world as he goes for this award.”
